Virginia, 1863

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth...could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years... If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide. --Abraham Lincoln

Russ and Levi headed over to the Civil War Battle and Encampment Re-enactment today. The weather was slightly drizzly today, but Russ thought it made the re-enactment more realistic. Levi and I will have to do some reading this week to enhance the visuals he acquired this afternoon.

The Northwest Civil War Council has information about their events and membership at their website.

OH!! I have always wanted to do that. Your pictures are awesome, Heidi!

Thanks, Lindsey! I wish I could claim the pictures, but Russ took these. Although, I did get to sort through about 200 pictures to find my favorites. :)

I wish I could have gone with them to see the battle. I was staying home with two little napping boys. The re-enactment group is doing a big set-up for 5 days over the fourth of July fairly near us. Maybe our whole family will be able to make it to that one!

Which battle were they re-enacting? Have you read Confederates in the Attic? It is a very fun read.

Cool pictures. Way to go Russ! I remember when I went to one. It was so awesome. Maybe we will see you at the one on the 4th.

Kevin, I'm not sure which battle they were re-enacting. My husband didn't say, and it wasn't on the paper he came home with. Darn husbands. :) I haven't read that book, but I checked it out on Amazon and it looks interesting. May have to add it to the to-read pile! Thanks.

Daphne and Co. :) Cute. Maybe we'll have to get together a party for the 4th of July. Yes?

How fun Heidi! You do so well at planning field trips, I admire that about you and want to include more of that in our homeschool adventures. Thanks for posting pictures as they are fun to look at and they inspire me to get out and do more things like that.

I'm laughing here, Heather. I *do* plan some field trips, but for this one my mom called an hour before and said 'oh, forgot to mention there was a Civil War thing in Lebanon today.' :) I don't do spontaneous very well (especially with the littles), so just Russ and Levi went.

In a few years it will be so much different for both of us--easier to get out, yes? :)
