Sharing Another Learning Room

Tera's Learning Room

When we visited our new friends this past Tuesday, I snuck a few shots of the room Tera has set up for homeschooling her boys. I know some of you love peeking into other learning rooms/school rooms, or whatever you want to call them, so I asked Tera if I could share the photos.

She has transformed her dining room space into a playful yet sophisticated space that works well for homeschooling (and is still functional as a dining room when guests come for dinner!). I love the Chinese lanterns hanging in the corner and the beautiful framed map on the wall. The large table and benches really provide room for some serious work!

The room is very accessible to all parts of the house, particularly the kitchen. How handy!

Tera also has beautiful baskets in her living room which hold books and other materials they use mostly at the couch. Each subject is in a separate basket.

What a beautiful room! It looks like it belongs in a Pottery Barn catalog :) I could only dream. Ours is functional, but definitely not that pretty...

This post reminds me of a somewhat unrelated homeschooling question I have been meaning to ask you.

Do you keep records of the specific things you do each day? I am contemplating whether to do this or not. It is another thing to do, but I'm wondering if I'll wish I had done it later.

If you do do this, I'm wondering what you've found works best -- journal? blog? photos? something else? I know the best approach won't be the same for everyone, but I'm looking for suggestions.

And if you don't do this, is there a particular reason why -- takes too much time, is too distracting, doesn't seem necessary, ....?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

Karen~ I typed up a list of subjects with blank lines to fill in (it is two pages long). It is certainly nothing fancy. I print one off for each week and write in what we do for each subject: Lesson #, Chapter Read, Books Levi read for free-reading, activity, mapwork, piano practice, etc. I have the pages in a 3-ring binder in the school room, open to the current week, so it is very easy to quickly jot down notes either during or at the end of each day. I have space to write field trips, extra activities, and general notes. Sometimes I write down lots of info in neat handwriting, sometimes it is very brief and messy :), but it is nice to have all that info documented and contained in a notebook. I have separate notebooks to keep info for individual subjects, so that is where I would keep more detailed info about what we did, or photos of any crafts or field trips. I'll do a post on that coming up. Also, I do consider my blog to be a sort of journal about our life and homeschool journey, and often refer back to my own posts when I need specific info about what we did or books we read. Does that answer your question at all?

That is so inspiring! We use our dining room for school also. I will have fun this summer figuring out ways to make it functional and attractive.

Thanks for your encouraging posts!

From Tera~ There's my school room/dining room!
Thanks for posting photos Heidi!
People probably won't check back now, but Chickadee wondered where I found the box with smaller boxes inside- Ace Hardware last summer. I haven't seen it since. It's metal and wire.

Everyone paid such nice compliments to me- if only they knew that I bargain hunted and almost everything in that room is very inexpensive!

This might be the best looking blogger blog I've seen! It's possible I'm partial to the subject matter - beautiful spaces and home school when the page loaded, but that bridge in the header stole my breath.

This is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing it with me. I wish someone would start a homeschool learning room or classroom blog. There's an idea. I would love to see the rooms that others have.
