...OK, I have to comment on the New Yorker article.

I have a couple reservations -- namely, she can't convince me that it's a great idea to consistently leave a baby to cry for five minutes at a time, French or otherwise, and I wish the evidence she cites for the tribe that raises more self-sufficient kids rested on more than one anecdote.

That said, this is an issue I think about often, and highlights some of the struggles I have in our own home. My oldest, who's almost 12, has grown to be very helpful. He actually takes the initiative to help with things many times, and he also has two or three regular paying jobs for neighbors, by which mechanism he is slowly becoming richer than his mother. ;-) Of course, there's room for improvement, but for his age, I think he's doing well. My daughters, on the other hand -- argh!! So little initiative, chores get done eventually but usually with multiple reminders, stuff gets left around, can't keep the junk in their room (which I do NOT buy for them) under control, etc. I've wondered how much is due to my accidental overindulgence due to a desire to be liked, appreciated, etc. I hate being a nag, but sometimes it seems like it's either that (the constant reminders) or doing it all myself, which doesn't serve them well at all in the long run. Truly, they have so much handed to them even though we're not exactly wealthy by American standards. But after reading this article this morning, I realized that I need to be more vigilant. Why should I buy them a hotdog for lunch at Costco if they can't be bothered to help put away the groceries, and leave their stuff piling up in the car?

Yikes, I've written a novel here. Lots more to say, but I'll either swallow it or send you an email. ;-)Hannahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11034180396689442335noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750282299627894194.post-78773182571571859552012-07-02T01:56:49.050-07:002012-07-02T01:56:49.050-07:00Wow!
